Ten days from now Anne and I greet 500 new chickens at our Many Spokes farm.
We have so much to do getting ready for this addition to our farm – everything from building more coops to ordering a pallet of 3750 egg cartons.
Yet I feel content and peaceful. Our lives turn now deeper into caring for and receiving from the land. In recent years we have grown most of our own food for ourselves – now we begin growing food – eggs – to share with our community.
We have learned to tend and build and love the soil from which our plants grow. Our garden is covered with a deep layer of wood chips that come from the Chelan recycling center. Adding 500 chickens to our current flock of 25 will add fertility to the fruit trees and vegetables we raise.
For the last year, we’ve been thankful each day to collect food scraps from Campbell’s restaurant and feed them to our flock. As our chicken numbers increase by 20 fold – we’ve already added places where we collect food – Artisan Bakery, IGA Market, and soon Riverwalk Inn, Local Myth Pizza, Stormy Mtn Brewery, and Red Apple Market. At the same time that we’re reducing waste in our community – we are feeding our chickens and feeding our soil a rich and varied diet. The result…
Happy Hens. Fantastic Soil. Great Eggs.
Another excitement – you’ll soon find our eggs at Markets and Restaurants here in the Chelan Valley, including:
Bear Food Market – Chelan
IGA Market – Chelan
Red Apple Market – Manson
Lone Pine Rest Stop – Hwy 97
Blueberry Hills – Manson
Riverwalk Inn – Chelan
Artisan Bakery – Chelan
Holden Village – Holden
We’ll need more chickens if we’re going to meet all these requests. In ten days we’ll start finding out if we like this chicken farmer life.
Open House and Blessing of the Chickens
At Many Spokes Farm – 770 Kinsey Road – Manson.
1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Blessing at around 2 p.m.
Thanks for your interest!
